Calixte Perreault

(14 Nov 1879 - 28 Feb 1942)

Starting with the strong pioneering spirit of Calixte and Maria Perreault, four generations grew in the Henribourg district. Calixte arrived in 1910 and took a homestead which the present hamlet of Henribourg is situated on. Mr. Hebert built him a two storey log house on the south eastern part of his quarter. Calixte came back in 1911 with his wife and four children. When they arrived the house was not finished and instead of the dry favorable weather as Calixte had seen in 1910, it was very wet and the roads were muddy. It was a good thing he had a pair of oxen and two horses and wagon to bring his belonging to Henribourg from Prince Albert. They first lived with Henri Morin in the hill east of Henribourg (Henribourg was named after Henri Morin who also donated land and lumber on which the Roman Catholic Church was built)

Calixte being of a business mind had his log house built larger than most as he turned his home into the first general store in Henribourg, where he sold garden produce, dairy goods, etc. He bought more land and his produce was sold in Prince Albert and to other settlers.

In 1917, he bought the store in Albertville which he exchanged in 1919 for Charles Goulet`s farm. He later bought Smyth`s, Patenaude's and Boileau`s homesteads. (1980 Henribourg Historical book)

In August 2000, I had the opportunity to talk to Calixte's eldest son, Ernest Perreault. For a man of nearly 95 years of age, his mind is as clear as ever. He told us that Calixte was known by the police! During the prohibition, Calixte was known for his moonshine and his bootlegging. On one occasion, when he knew that the RCMP was on its way, he dumped his stash into the animal's feed in the barn. All went well until the police noticed that the cows were stumbling in the field. At another time, he realized that young boys were stealing his beer, so he urinated in a few bottles and placed them to attract the boys.... however, the police arrived before the boys and when Calixte swore that he did not have beer in those bottles, they opened them and took a gulp.... that landed him in jail for one month! He was fined on many occasions and after a $4,000 fine which forced him to sell part of the farm, the boys put all of the belongings in their mother's name. It now explains why his daughter, Rosa, my mother-in-law, was so much against drinking. She had seen its worst consequences. - Diane Lebrun
