The Daughter of Pierre Duteau (Dutost)and Jeanne Perrin and Sister to Charles.
She was born in La Rochelle, Charente-Maritime, France.
She was Christened on August 25, 1639 at the Calvinist Temple, Villeneuve, LaRochelle, Aunis, France.
She was one of 262 brave and adventurous women who made the journey to New France on their own.
Marie was 19 years old when she appeared before the Notary Teuleran of LaRochelle on April 17th, 1658 to sign papers to allow her to come to Canada. She arrived at Quebec aboard the Prince-Guillaume. Marie signed a contract of service of one three years duration, in front of the Teuleran notary. Marie did not benefit from a paid passage and dowry drawn from the King’s treasury, but they did face the same if not worse hardships and dangers. Known as the Filles à Marier or “marriageable girls,” they were the first single women to set foot in the colony since its return from the English in 1632. True pioneers and heroines, they left their homes in France to found new ones in the New World such as Marie did. Truely she was a Pioneer. Marie marries Michel LeMay known as Poudrier; The religious ceremony takes place between the new elected officials on June 15, 1659 at Saint-Marie-Madeleine, Cape-of-the-Madeleine, Quebec, Canada. Marie and Michel lived in the Cape of the Madeleine some 12 years. With the census of 1667, they have 18 arpents of ground in culture and have four animals with horns. On November 30th, 1675, in Lotbiniere, Lotbiniere, Quebec Marie Dutaut dies leaving in mourning 9 children.
