Genealogy Of Valentine ThrashGeneration No. 2
VALENTINE THRASH was born January 31, 1749 in Germany, and died March 03, 1835 in Buncombe
County, North Carolina. He married (1) UNKNOWN. He married (2) BARBARA YAUNTES.
Notes
Valentine Thrash was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and applied for and was granted a pension No.
23525 issued February 28, 1834, in the amount of $45.83 per annum. The National Genealogical Society
lists on p. 1160 in -Index of Revolutionary War Pension Applications- "Thrash, Volintine or Valentine, N.
C., Barbara, W1332; BLWt. 54232-160-55."
According to the pension papers, he was born in Germany in 1749. He stated that his father died in
Maryland and that at the beginning of the war he was living in Orange County, N. C., and was still living
there at the close of the war. He lived there for another year and then moved to Botetourt County, Va., to
the part of the county which later became Montgomery County. He is listed in the -Virginia Tax Payers
1782-1787- p. 126, "Thrink, Valentine, Poll Tax - 1, County - Bot," (Botetourt County).
In -A Brief Of Wills And Marriages In Montgomery And Fincastle Counties Virginia 1773-1831- by Anne
Lowry Warrell, Roanoke, Virginia, on p. 40 is: "Thrash, John, and Liddy Cole. Old Marriage List. .
.1786-1790." "Thrash, William, and Betsy Barnett. Geo. Brown, Jr., surety - Jan. 25, 1802." "William,
and Catey Lester. Stephen Lester, surety. Mar. by Peter Howard - Jan. 21, 1815." We deduce from this
that Valentine Thrash was married when he lived in Virginia and that he had, in all probabilty, two sons.
We found Valentine Thrash listed in -The North Carolinian, A Quarterly Journal of Genealogy and
History- North Carolina, Vol V #3, No. 19, Sept. 1959 under the 1800 Census of Buncombe County, N.
C., p. 700 "p. 191. . .Volentine Thrash,. . ." So, he was again living in North Carolina at the time of the
1800 census and is listed as a resident of Buncombe County. He was still living in this county when he
applied for his pension.
Barbara Yauntes and her small daughter, Lucinda, came to Buncombe County and, it is stated, they were
in a small abandoned cabin. She and Valentine Thrash were married October 19, 1818. Valentine's
grandson, John Thrash, Jr., came to North Carolina from Virginia and married Lucinda Yauntes, Barbara
Yauntes Thrash's daughter, on June 1, 1828. John and Lucinda Thrash had a large family. Some of their
decendants still live in the Asheville, N. C. area..
Barbara Thrash, as stated above, received a widow's pension for the Revoluntionary War service of
Valentine Thrash
