Notes
Birth
Gustav's birthplace is somewhat unclear. Census records indicate his birthplace as Germany. However, his World War I and World War II draft cards lists his birthplace as Austria ("Buns" Austria on the WW I draft card). Ship passenger lists from Hamburg and New York record the Kurtz family's origin as Güng, Ungarn in present-day Hungary, which was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1867 to 1918) at the time of Gustav's birth. It is likely that this was his birthplace, but changing national boundaries and general misunderstanding of these boundaries resulted in the conflation of Germany, Austria, and Hungarian heritage.Departure
Gustav Kurtz, Jr., immigrated to the United States as a child, traveling with his parents and two siblings in steerage on the ship Dania of the Hamburg American Line. Originally from Güng, Ungarn in Hungary, they departed from Hamburg, Germany, on 12 March 1893, and arrived in New York City.Residence
Gustav Kurtz, Jr., may have lived on a farm in Sherman, Brookings, South Dakota in 1909, three years prior to his marriage. This farm was owned by his father, Gustav Adolph Kurtz, Sr., which included 160 acres and a house in the NE 1/4 of Section 36 of Sherman Township. This section is believed to have originally been the "School Section,"evidenced by several of the quarters indicated as "school land." According to Jason Gustav Kurtz, a descendant who grew up on the property, this farm became known as "the home place."Marriage
Gustav Adolph Kurtz is listed as a bachelor, aged 22, from Bushnell, Brookings, South Dakota and Iva Kretsinger is listed as maiden, aged 18, from Elkton, Brookings, South Dakota. The union was officiated by W. A. Black, minister, from Brookings, Brookings, South Dakota.Endnotes
