Notes
Military
Harlan served as a private in the 148th Aero Squadron and then the 1101st Aero Replacement Squadron during World War I (service number 37077) from October 18, 1917 to May 10, 1919. At some point, he was also a member of the 4th Air Service Casual Company, a holding unit/formation awaiting one of the following: discharge from the Corps, training (usually at a formal school), or deployment to a unit. Harlan departed from New York on U.S. Army troop transport #527 to Europe on February 26, 1918, as a member of the 148th Aero Squadron. Upon the 1101st Aero Squadron's demobilization, Harlan departed Brest, France, on April 17, 1919, on the U.S. Army troop transport ship PUEBLO, arriving in Hoboken, New Jersey on April 28, 1919.The 1101st Aero Replacement Squadron was an Air Service Replacement Squadron with the American Expeditionary Force in Europe from April 13, 1918 to February 1919. The squadron was organized in France and activated on April 13, 1918 as part of the 1st Air Depot in Colombey-les-Belles Airdrome. It demobilized in May 1919.
Aero Squadrons were organized under the Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps of the U.S. Army before and during World War I. Aero Squadrons were the designation of the first United States Army aviation units until the end of World War I. These units consisted of combat flying, training, ground support, construction and other components of the Air Service. After World War I ended, the majority of these squadrons were demobilized.
The United States declared war and entered World War I on April 6, 1917. In January 1918, a new numbering scheme for aero squadrons was set up. Numbers 1–399 were for Aero Service Squadrons (AS); 400–599 for Aero Construction Squadrons (ACS); 600–799 for Aero Supply Squadrons; and 800–1099 for Aero Repair and Replacement Squadrons. Aero Replacement Squadrons were training groups for pilots to qualify flying on a particular aircraft, for training aircraft mechanics, to provide replacement aircraft for fleet squadron attrition, and to standardize maintenance and aircraft operations.
