Revolutionary War Veterans

By act of the Maryland General Assembly of 1777, the State lands "Westward of Fort Cumberland " were reserved for Maryland soldiers of the Continental Army. In 1787 Col. Francis Deakins surveyed 4,165 fifty acre lots; 2,575 were already allotted to the veterans, but only two of them (Dudley Lee and Richard Tasker) settled in the Garrett County area where most of the lots were located. However, after the Revolutionary War, among our early settlers were a number of veterans, whose names, so far as we have records of them, are included in the following list:

GARRETT COUNTY VETERANS OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR

MICHAEL PAUGH -(b.1751) - 12th Virginia Regiment, July 28, 1777, to close of war. Capt.Wm. Vause's Company. Served at Valley forge in 1778. Buried at Mt. Zion Church Cemetery near Swanton, MD. He has a government marker.

"Michael PAUGH of Allegany County sold to Thomas B. CRAWFORD
of the same place for $267, all that parcel of land lying in Allegany
County called Sandy Spring which was a patent on August 11, 1798 and
containing 60 acres. Polly, wife of Michael PAUGH consented to the sale.
Recorded November 23, 1805"

Was living on his farm of "Sandy Spring" in the Glades Hundred or district #1 in 1800. This was in Allegany Co (now Garrett). The Maryland assesment roll of 1798 for Glades Hundred assesses Michael Paugh, Sr. with 63 acres of land, 2 horses and 13 cows with a total assessement of 53 English Pounds, 18 shillings, 8 pence. Michael Paugh's family consisted of him, his wife and 5 children in 1800. According to a bible that was in possession of Charles Paugh (b. 1893), descendent of William Paugh (b. 1818) we get the descendents.
