Willard died in a Japanese suicide raid on the hospital ship USS Comfort near
Okinawa. He joined the Navy in October of 1943 and had been on sea duty since
January 1, 1944. The Navy Department message, from Vice Admiral Randall
Jacobs, said the body had been buried outside the continental United States.
