Caswell joined the Missouri 8th Calvary with his brothers and cousins. He was
awarded the Medal of Valor when he carried a wounded Confederate soldier to
safety during a battle at Helena, Arkansas. The medal was later given to E G
Moore. Caswell surrendered with his surviving brothers and cousin on May 27,
1865 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He became a successful farmer after the war.
