William enlisted as a Minute Man with Captain Abraham Lyons Company of the 4th Battalion, Monmouth County, New Jersey Militia. He was promoted to corporal in 1777 and sergeant in 1779. He served until the end of the war. He was wounded in the Battle of Springfield.
