Occupation

During his time in Llangeitho he wrote a biography of Daniel Rowland. Entitled Cofiant Y Parchedig Daniel Rowland Llangeitho. It was first published in 1905 by Y Wasg Eglwysig Gymreig, Lampeter and again in 1925 by W. Spurrell and Son, Carmarthen.

LAMPETER. TITHE SALE.—On Saturdav last, Llangeitho parish was the scene of another encounter between the agents of the tithe-owner, the Rev. David Worthington , vicar of the parish and the anti-tithers. The person who owed tithes in the present instance was Mr John Williams, who lives in a farm called Cwmmelin. The amount claimed was £6 1s 0d, being one and a half years tithe-rent charge due on the 1st Oct 1890. A distress was levied there on the 29th September last, by John Herbert, bailiff of the Lampeter County Court, when 2 heifers, 1 steer, and a rick of hay were impounded. On the 1st day named, Messrs John Herbert, Evan Thomas, Cefnbryn Terrace, Lampeter, John Richards, of Red Lion, Lampeter, and Thomas Williams, Tynyporth Inn, Llanwenog, started early for the statu quo, and found on entering the village of Llangeitho, a large band of anti-tithe warriors awaiting their arrival. As soon as the bailiff and his men came within reach the party of warriors lined up and followed him to Cwmmelin, rendering enchantment to the country scenery as they went along by striking dismal chords from their tin pans. To try and effect a sale was impossible, although the tenant undertook the responsibility of any disturbance. At last the tenant being evidently impressed with the results of the County Court actions recently tried at Lampeter produced the necessary cash, and he was relieved from the claim to the dismay of the crowd. The anti-tithers were not, however, to be done by this sudden freak, and on nearing a small brook decided to make deciples of John the Baptist of all the bailiffs. A noteworthy feature of the present campaign was that no members of the constabulary was present, but it may be that the appearance of Evan Thomas in a livery attire had the desired effect in that respect, and the stalwart appearance of Tom Tynyporth, had no doubt a soothing effect upon the tinpot band.

Probate was granted to Alun Trevor Worthington, medical student. His effects were valued at £942 (£28,231.74 in 2005).
