Ralph and Mary were divorced. Mary married Thoralf "Alf" Moline in 1938 and Alf became the stepfather to Mary's five children. According to the 1940 census, the children were Ethel-age 11, Ralph-age 10, Alice-age 8, Thoralf-age 4, and Dale-age 2. Ethel, Ralph, and Alice kept the last name Hardenbrook. At some point, Thoralf and Dale changed their last name to Moline. Mary died in 1951.
