Sir Reginald SCOTT

(1512 - 16 Dec 1554)

The Scott family was among the leading families in Kent during the reign of King Henry VII. Sir Reginald was the Sheriff of Kent and Captain of Calais and Sangatte1, 2, 3 under Henry VIII. He was the High Sheriff of Kent, 1541-42.

Sir Reginald Scott published The Discoverie of Witchcraft, a partially sceptical book in 1854, intended as an exposé of early Modern witchcraft. Scott believed that the prosecution of those accused of withcraft was irrational and un-Christian, and he held the Roman Church responsible. Popular belief held that all obtainable copies were burned on the accession of James I in 1693.
