pension file – W21351 On 16 August 1832, SquireHowe of Barnston, Lower Canada, aged seventy-nine years, made application for apension based on his service in the Revolution. On 8 August 1776, he enlistedfrom Plainfield, Connecticut in a militia company of Capt. Andrew Bacchusordered by Gen. Washington for the relief of Long Island. The troops marched toWest Chester, New York and then to White Plains in the following month. Theywere next in Vermont until the time of his discharge in the month of Novemberhaving served three and a half months. In May 1778, he was drafted fromPlainfield for a term of six weeks to guard Fort Griswold at Groton. He wasagain drafted in August in the company of Capt. Chamberlain and served onemonth. Squire was credited with six months, four days of service. He reportedhe was born in Plainfield on 2 November 1752, After the war, he resided inRoyalton, Vermont for twenty years and then in Barnston. Squire received apension of $20.44 per annum.[1]On 4 September 1840,Phebe Howe, a resident of Barnston and aged eighty years, made an applicationfor the widow’s pension. She gave the date of her marriage to Squire as 8 April1779 and his death on 6 February 1834. On 9 June 1849, Jonas Howe administratorof the estate of Phebe Howe provided a statement that Phebe died at Barnston on10 September 1848. He also provided a page from the family records giving thedates of birth of Squire, Phebe, and eight children in the family (not includingthe first-born unnamed infant). The final pension payment due to Phebe was madeto the then surviving children on 19 June 1849: Jonas Howe, Sarah Wheeler,Phebe Smith, and Squire B. Howe. [1] U.
