Christoph Bührer
(1653 - 30 Dec 1693)
In the late Middle Ages, when surnames were first being assumed, the fundamental profession was agriculture, which occupied about 95% of the population as opposed to the less than 5% it occupies today. Hence many families were named Ackermann (field man), Bauer or Baumann (farmer), Felder or Feldmann (field man), and Pflug or Pfluger (plow man). Bührer is a derivative of Bauer. In the US it has been anglicized to Bierer and Berry.
