Jane Newhouse was born Jane Dougherty in Ireland about 1790. Herhusnan d , A nthony Newhouse, Jr. was a cabinet maker in Hempfield Twp,Westmorel a n d Co., PA. At onetime he owned 14 acres and another time 300,for whic h h e w as taxed. However, he might have jointly owned the 300acres with h i s b rother Jacob. For some unknown reason, Anthony died inSomerset Co. a t t h e home of George Fife on January 27, 1827 at the age of37. Afterwar ds J a ne opened a boarding house in Pittsburgh, where she islisted in th e 1 8 40 Census. At that time she had 14 male workers asboarders. In 1845 s h e l ost the boarding house during the "GreatPittsburgh Fire" of 1845. W e d o n't know how many children she had. The 1850 Census shows Jane atag e 6 0 l iving with James Newhouse, age 30, a "chair maker". We can assume he w a s her son. James is listed in the 1860 Census, in the same Ward 1a nd i n a b oarding house. Unmarried and "chair maker". We can thereforeas sum e th at Jane died between 1850 and 1860. A Widow Dougherty is lis te d i n the 1810 Census p. 23 In the 1850 Census we see a Margaret D o u gherty, age 45 and b. Ireland,living under the same household. She co u l d be a relative to Jane.
