Jacob received his schooling in the Thomas schoolhouse in Hempfield To w n ship. He learned the carpenter trade with his brother Zachariah T. P o o l. In the spring of 1874, Jacob went west, locating in Cedar Rapids, I o w a, where he worked as a carpenter for some time. In Cedar Rapids he m e t a nd married Charlotte Williams. Later they moved to St. Mary 's, Ka n s as, where Jacob did farming and carpentry work. He was a Mason fo r 3 8 y ears.
