Joseph Markle became one of those engaged in this trade . In 1799, he m a d e a trip to New Orleans on a flatboat loaded with flour from his fath e r 's mill. Leaving Robbstown , now West Newton, in March, he was six w e e ks on the voyage . He returned by the "wilderness route", going from N a t chez to Nashville by the Indian trail through the Chickasaw nation. F r o m Nashville, he returned by way of Lexington, K Y & Chillicothe , Oh. W h e n his father retired from business , about the time he returned, he t o o k over the management of the mills & farms that his father had establ i s hed, conducting them with great success. In 1806, he erected another g r i st mill, & in 1811, in partnership with Simon Drum of Greensburg, the f a t her of Adjutant General Drum, of the U .S. Army, he built a large pap e r m ill, the third of the kind west of the Alleghenies. During the War o f 1 8 12, he organized a company of light dragoons which included 4 membe rs o f t he Markle. The troop remained in the service for 11 months, part ici pa ting in the Battle of Mississinewa and in the siege of Fort Meigs. S o o n after his return from the army, Captain Markle was elected major-ge n e ral of the Pennsylvania militia for the district comprising Fayette & W e s t." Source : J.V.
