Anna Barbara Bierer

(19 Sep 1830 - 19 Jan 1909)

After Anna Steelsmith died, her daughter 8-day-old Anna Barbara was ca r e d for by her grandparents (John M. and Barbara Bierer) on their 176 a c r e farm on the West Newton road 2 miles west of the center of Greensbu r g . Hence, when her father David Bierer married Catherine Dull and lef t G r eensburg for Ohio four years later in 1835, 5-year-old Anna Barbara c o n tinued to live in southwest Big with her grandparents until John Bier e r 's death in 1851. On Oct 11, 1851 Anna Barbara Bierer m. Robert C. B e s t Sr. John Bierer left Anna $1030 in his will (Will Book p300). He a l s o gave Anna the right to live for the rest of her life on 2 acres of t h e B ierer farm on West Newton road. After receiving the Bierer inherita n c e in 1855, Robert and Anna Barbara bought a cow and probably lived on t h e 2 a cres for awhile. But in 1858 the Bierer farm was sold to the Carb o n C oal Co. at which time Robert and Anna had six children. In April 18 5 8 R obert bought a 5.22 acre parcel for $850 located a few hundred feet f r o m a coal mine in south-east Greensburg at 616 Mount Pleasant St. (the n P l easant Unity St.) on which he built a tiny (19' x 23') two-story br ic k h ouse for his family . The Bests deeded a quarter acre of land on t h e w est side of their 5 acres to the school district and a small school h o u se was built there. Note that Anna Steelsmith died only 8 day s a f ter birthing Anna Barbara Bierer, probably of childbed fever caused b y t h e doctor's dirty hands.
