Obit: "Daily News Standard", Uniontown, PA., Wednesday, 28 March 1906 C a p tain Bierer Dead: Venerable citizen of town passes away Wednesday mo r n ing, aged 83 years. Last but two of 11 children of the late Everhart B i e rer he served in the legislature , in the army and as Burgess of Unio n t own, also organized St. Omer's Commandery. Captain John Bierer, a g e d 83 years, and one of the best known old resident's of Uniontown, di e d a t 8:45 o'clock Wednesday morning, March 28, 1906, at his home at 35 P i t tsburgh Street. He had been in poor health since January and had bee n c o nfined to his bed for three weeks. He had been very low for several d a y s and his death was not unexpected . He was conscious almost to the l a s t and his mind was very clear. Captain Bierer was a lifelong resident o f U n iontown, having been born on Mill street. His father was Everhart B i e rer, who came from Westmoreland county to Uniontown in 1817. Captain B i e rer had ten brothers and sisters, but only two are now living, Miss E l i za Jane Bierer of Uniontown and Colonel. Everhart Bierer, Sr., of Hia w a tha, Kansas. In former years Captain Bierer was a very active spirit i n t h e community. In 1854 he organized St. Omer's Commandery, Knights T em p lar, in Uniontown, but when he went to the war the commandery was mo v e d to Brownsville and is still in existence there. Captain Bierer went o u t a s first sergeant of Company G of the Eighth Pennsylvania Reserves, A p r il 22, 1861, under Captain S. D. Oliphant, that being the first compa n y t o go out from this section. He helped organize Company K of the 21 2 t h Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery and served ten months as its first lie u t enant and was also captain of Company H of the 171st Pennsylvania. C a p tain Bierer's sons, Major Everhart and Captain Daniel Bierer, were ga l l ant officers of the "Fighting Tenth", Regiment in the Philippines. Fr o m 1 867 to 1872 Captain Bierer was revenue assessor for the district in w h i ch Uniontown was located. He was admitted to the bar in 1845 and was e l e cted to the legislature in 1857 on the Democratic ticket, but was aft e r t he war a Republican. He also served as burgess of Uniontown, being s u c ceeded by the late Jesse Reed in the 80's. Captain Bierer on Septembe r 2 5 , 1849, married Miss Julia C. Wathen and she survives him, with eig ht c h ildren: Henry of Pittsburgh, and Miss Sophia, Captain Daniel, Wils on S . , C harles, Thomas S., Colonel Everhart and Miss Mary R., all of U niont ow n. Funeral from the home Friday at 3 p.m. with services by Dr. L loyd a n d interment in Oak Grove cemetery.
