N i e man was born in Harderbergen, Germany on May 5, 1817. He serv ed as a p r i vate in the Prussian army and was for a time the next man in t he ran k s t o one of the kings's sons, who all commenced their military educ at i o n by serving as privates in the ranks. Nieman got the same kind of r a t i ons as this royal prince and had the same accommodations and privil eg e s . Hewas a finely drilled soldier and when over 80 years of age wa s s t i ll an expert in the use of a sword or sabre. After coming to the U n i ted S tates, he served in a West Virginia regiment throughout the Civ i l W ar. For his bass singing, Mr. Nieman was known all over Fayette Cou n t y a nd in many counties of West Virginia and it was often claimed for h i m t h at he was the greatest amateur bass singer in West Virginia. He h a d a v oi ce of remarkable power which could beheard to the farthest lim i ts o f a ny large crowd. He was a deacon in the Dunkard Church for 20 y e a rs preced ing his death and at meetings all over the county he sang. I n p o litics, Mr. Nieman was a strong Democrat and he took great intere s t i n o x roasts, pole raising and such gatherings. He was quite a read e r a n d took special interest in the daily papers; as they gave him curre n t n e ws of his fatherland. Mr. Nieman came to America when he was 28 yea rs o l d andsettled in Stewar tstown, WV where he cut and shipped timber. H e a l so becamea fine millwri ght and miller and followed that trade. Ab ou t 1 8 years ago in1886, he we nt to Bruceton, WV and purchased a farm a n d t ook contracts for buildings b ridges and milldams. Later he moved t o M u ddy Creek and opened a flour mi ll for two years and then moved to G i b bon Glade in Wharton Township, Fayet te , Pennsylvania. He liv e d t here with his son Daniel who is n ow aresident of Uniontown and emp l o yed at the distillery of D.J. Johnso n. Mr. Nieman lived in Brandonv i l le about two years before his death on M arch 12, 1904. He was a ver y h o nest and straightforward in all of his dea lings and was ahighly re sp e cted citizen. John H. Nieman serviced in the Union Army during the C i v il War and Alva N ieman has the gun that John H. Nieman used in that w a r .
