In 1835 Samuel moved his family to Grapeville, where he continued as a s h o emaker. In the spring of 1845 he accepted the position of toll gate k e e per on the Pittsburgh and Stoyestown Pike, about a mile west of Green s b urg. At that time all merchandise from the eastern markets bound for P i t tsburgh and the west passed over this pike, being hauled in six or ei g h t horse Conestoga Wagons.
