Joseph Sr. came to Westmoreland Co., PA early in the 19th century. The 1 8 5 0 census indicated that he was born in New Jersey. He came to Sewick l e y Township, Pennsylvania when he was 16 with a man named William. He s e t tled among the Quakers of Sewickley Township and learned the trade of h o u se carpenter. A Quaker preacher married him to Barbara Funk. He eve n t ually bought land became a farmer in Westmoreland , Pennsylvani a . J oseph is buried in the Funk Cemetery, South Huntington Twp., PA.
