According to "A History of Spartanburg County" compiled by the Work Projects Administration the Penny family was among a group of Scotch-Irish Presbyterian settlers that migrated from Pennsylvania to the Spartanburg District, SC area in 1761. They also included families with the surname Barry, Moore, Collins, Anderson, Thompson, Vernon, Pearson, Dodd, Jamison, Ray, McMahon, Miller and Nichols.

Witness Samuel Brice and Sarah McMillin. Signed Sarah Penny's mark. Wit. oath Aug 11, 1813 Samuel Brice to John Chapman. Rec. Nov. 8, 1813.

Spartanburg County SC Court of Ordinary 28 March 1816 Samuel Brice returned the citation to prove the will of Sarah Penny decd; proved by James Neasbitt; quallifyed Samuel Brice exr; John Collins a named exr; refusing to qualify.
