Charles Evans Wingo
"Born, reared and educated in the county of Amelia, Virginia, came to Richmond in 1859, and engaged in business as clerk in the wholesale grocery house of Eggleston & Fitzgerald; then doing a large business of 14th street. He remained with this firm one year, when he was offered a situation with Samuel M. Price & Co., a large retail dry goods house, doing businss on Main street, as entry clerk and cashier, which he accepted.
In 1861, as soon as the news of the Battle of Bull Run reached Richmond, he surrendered his sutiation and enlisted as a private in the First Company of Richmond Howitzers, Col. John C. Shields commanding, stationed at Centreville, Virginia. He remained with this company until severely wounded in the Battle of Sharpsburg, September 17, 1862, his wounds disabling him for further field services (lost use of his right arm after wounds at Antietum). He was placed on the retired list of the C. S. Army, but was later assigned to duty as enrolling officer of the county of Amelia. He joined General Lee's army on the retreat, and surrendered with it at Appomattox. He has an only brother who was in service, and also surrendered at Appomattox.
After the close of the war, Mr. Wingo returned to Richmond, and engaged in the mercantile business, first with John C. Miller & Co., dry goods, afterwards with Gardner & Carlton, boots and shoes. In 1870 he founded the business in which he is senior partner, the firm of Wingo, Ellett & Crump, wholesale boot and shoes.
Mr. Wingo is a son of William A. Wingo, who was born in Amelia County in 1818, and died in 1846, and who was a son of Allen Wingo, of the same county. His mother, born in Amelia county in 1820, and still living, is Sarah Jane, daughter of John and Mary A. Johnson, nee Wooldridge, both of Amelia County. On December 17, 1878, he married Sallie Belle Knight, who is a daughter of Col. William Carter Knight, and a granddaughter of John Howell Knight, of Nottoway County, Virginia. Her mother is Mrs. Cleverenda T. Knight of Richmond, Virginia. Their children are four, Janie Belle, Charles E., William Wythe and John Trevillian."
Founded Wingo, Elliett and Crump Shoe Company in Richmond. Made shoes and boots. He retired as President in 1907. Was VP of American National Bank, a Director with Commonwealth Bank and member of the Virginia Legislature and Chairman of the Richmond Democratic Convention. Children attended McGuire School for Boys. Member of First Baptist Church of Richmond, Virginia.

One of Richmond's Fair Debutantes
""This season has been one of unusual gayety in the social circles of Richmond, several of the fair young ladies of Virginia's aristocratic capital having made their debute this season under circumstances of exceptional brilliancy and ecluf. One of the most notable occuations of this character was the cotillion given at the Jefferson hotel in Richmond several days ago by Colonel and Mrs. Charles E. Wingo, complementary to their daughter, Miss Janie Wingo, whose formal entrance into society was thus notably signalized. Miss Wingo has many warm friends and relatives in Atlanta. She comes of fine old aristocratic stock, and is connected with many of Virginia's patrician families. Her sweet amiabilities of disposition and her grace of mind and person are maniforld and she possesses that happy magnetism which draws every one to her. Her friends in Atlanta predict that she will be one of the acknowledged queens of Richmond society. Speaking of this social event, one of the daily papers of Richmond says:
"The first cotillion of the season was given at the Jefferson Hotel on Wednesday evening by Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Wingo, to introduce to society their daughter, Miss Janie Wingo. The handsom ballroom of the Jefferson Hotel was beautifully decorated, and presented a lovely scene with the brightly tinted dresses of the girls, relieved by the men's somber dress. The german was led by Mr. Adolphus Blair with skill and grace. Those receiving were Mrs. C. E. Wingo, black embroidered lace over satin., diamond orniments; Mr. C. E. Wingo, Miss Janie Wingo, white shirred liberly silk over taffeta, spangled worsted; Miss Sally Dunnington, white brocated silk, real lace; Miss Nina Armistead, of Baltimore; Miss Louise Knight, white organide over cirise; Miss Fanny Knight, Mrs. W. J. Walker, Mrs. Frank Powers, Mrs. John T. Knight, Mrs. Charles T. O'Ferrell, Misses Lucy Hayes, Elizabeth Davenport, Bessie Watkins, Virginia Boyd, and Messrs. W. J. Walker and Frank Powers.""
Obituary in the "Religious Herald", a Baptist Newspaper published in Richmond, Virginia
Published 3/23/1911
"Captain Charles E. Wingo, who died at his home in Richmond, on Monday, March 20th, was a large minded, upright and public spirited citizen, a simple-hearted, faithful and devout Christian, and a loyal and intelligent Baptist. The First church of this city, where he held his membership and to whose interests he gave a single-hearted devotion, will miss him sadly, and thousands of friends grieve over his going. May the comforting mercies of Jehovah abound for his bereaved family!"
