Served as a private in the U. S. Army in WWI. Enlisted on July 8, 1918 at Nashville, Tennesse in Company C, 46'th Infantry, Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia and was discharged at Fort Orglethorpe, Georgia on June 20, 1919. While at the Fort he participated in poison gas testing.

Ferrell told Tracy Robb that he and his brother Wiley Davis Wingo cut and hauled logs from their land to Ridgetop to be used as support members in the construction of the railroad tunnel there. His wife's father worked at the Sycamore Powder Mills...
