Obituary in the "Religious Herald" a Baptist Newspaper published in Richmond, Virginia
Published 2/5/1931

"JAMES POLK WINGO, SR. On October 5, 1930, the Death Angel entered the Wingo home, at "Mount Plesant", near Painsville, Va., and carried to his eternal rest the soul of James P. Wingo, Sr.
Mr. Wingo was one of seven children born to Williamson and Aseneth Ora Wingo, of Amelia county, Va., and outlived in his eighty-six years all of the members of his father's family.
While a young man of eighteen years Mr. Wingo took charge of the telegraph office at Meherrin, Va., remaining there several years. Then he was transferred to Keysville, where he stayed a couple of years.
At the close of the War Between the States he was sent to Amelia Court House, remaining there till his father's failing health called him back to the home farm. After passing through a severe drought he became manager of a large plantation for Colonel William Hood, in Mississippi. After four years there illiness again called him to his father's bedside and he decided to remain in Virginia. On May 3, 1876, he united in marriage to Alice Virginia Chappel, of his home neighborhood.
Eight children were born to the union, three boys and five girls. On May 3, 1926, this worthy couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, surrounded by their eight children and their families, besides a number of friends and their pastor, Rev. S. T. Habel and wife.
Mr. Wingo was a great gardener as well as farmer, finding much pleasure in work well done and doing it always with a song in his heart and on his lips.
For twelve years he served his county as member of the School Board, and for thirty years as registrar. He was the oldest and one of the most devoted members of Union Baptist church, near Painville, and was laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining the church, followed by one of the largest concourses ever gathered there.
A very solemn and impressive service was onducted by his pastor, Rev. W. V. Smith, and the body laid in the final resting place, which semed like a garden of flowere--the blooms he loved so.
This kindly, courteous, genial gentleman will be missed by all who knew and loved him and his memory will ever be a benediction.
He leaves his loving widow and his eight children as follows: Clara (Mrs. J. W. Elam), Mary (Mrs. B. C. Seay), Sallye (Mrs. W. J. Perrin), Clifton Chappell Wingo, George Cabell Wingo, all of Jetersville, Va., James P. Wingo, of Richmond, Va; Josephine (Mrs. B. G. Baker), of Ansonia, Conn., and Pearl (Mrs. F. H. Gilliam) of Rice, Va.
His personal friend and physician, Dr. R. J. Styers, in his kind and gentle way, ministered to his every need, his wife and loved ones did all that was human power could do to keep him here a little longer, but God called him, and, like a tired child he fell asleep to wake in the heaven he so often longed for.
In Mr. Wingo's deth his family has lost a devoted husband and father, his church a most faithful attendant and his community an exemplar citizen. But heaven is just a little brighter and so much nearer because he is waiting for us there. LULA P. LORD Treasurer W. M. U. Middle District Association, Jetersville, Va."
