Billy met Cettie when she was six. Her father was walking her to school on her first day after moving to Heard County from Alabama. He sent her ahead but she had stopped. Billy talked her into continuing to school with him.
Billy proposed to her years latter on the same dirt road. They were supposed to marry at Christmas 1893 but Billy had typhoid fever. They married the next January and raised twelve children.
