John Lumpkin HAYNES
(4 Jul 1839 - 9 Jun 1924)
John Lumpkin was a 1st Lt. in Co. I, 14th Alabama Infantry, CSA "Hilliby Rifles". He was with Lee's Army of Northern Virginia when captured on 7 May 1864 and spent the rest of the war at Ft. Deleware, Deleare, Morris Island near Charleston SC and Polaski, GA. He was released 2 months after the war ended on 6 June 1865. He was one of the "Immortal 600".
Pension application # 23791.
A marker is to be erected at Ft. Pulaski honoring the Immortal Six Hundred, as they have come to be known.}
Several books have been written of this brave group of men. One that is out of print was The Immortal Six Hundred by Major J. Ogden Nash and two recent ones, The Biographical Sketch of the Immortal Six Hundred and The Immortal Captives, both written by Mauriel Joslin of Sparta, Georgia.
John Lumpkin Haynes died in 1925 and is buried in Elmgrove Cemetery between Westminster and Anna in Collin County, Texas. His descendants have placed a Civil War Marker on his grave stating, "One of the Immortal Six Hundred."
