Philip Sherman

Philip Sherman emigrated from England to New England and settled in Roxbury. In the Anne Hutchinson troubles he took the popular (her) side, but as Governor Winthrop ultimately prevailed, he with others found it convenient to remove to Rhode Island, and in Providence, with eighteen others, purchased the Island of Aquidneck, "through the joint influence of Roger Williams and Sir Henry Vane with the Narragansett sachems. The Indian name of the place where the settlement was made was Pocasset, and was retained some time by the settlers, until changed to Portsmouth." "The purchase was completed March 24, 1638. On the first day of July, 1639, they established a regular government of which William Coddkigton was chosen governor and Philip Sherman secretary. After this he often held office in the Colony, and in critical periods, as a man of intelligence, wealth and influence, was frequently consulted by those in authority. The early records prepared by him still remain in Portsmouth, and show him to have been a very neat and expert penman as well as an educated man. went to what is now Rhode Island, where he purchased a large tract of land from the Indians, March 28, 1638, and when the colony was formed legally on July I, 1639, he became its secretary. He was also town clerk of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, for many years, and there died in 1687. He married Sarah Odding, and reared a large family, including a son Peleg. After moving to Rhode Island, Philip Sherman became a member of the Society of Friends.
