Death
In 1775, William of John, (Sr)., wrote his will, probated in the same year.The structure of the will indicates he had four children from a first wife, (unnamed) - William, Esther, Mary and Owen; and four children from a second wife, Elizabeth - Arthur John, Laurence, Ann and Elizabeth. He left his first four children one shilling each, while the children of his second wife shared in the remainder of his estate if their mother (Elizabeth) died or remarried. William, the Sergeant, (no longer Jr.) was 41 in 1775.
WILL OF WILLIAM ROBY:
I, William, son of John Roby of Charles County, in the Province of Maryland &c. To wife Elizabeth land during widowhood, riding mare, side saddle and one third personal property.
To son, John Arthur, all lands at death or marriage of his mother.
To son Lawrence, saddle and gun.
To daughter Ann, personal property.
To dearly beloved children Ann, Lawrence, Elizabeth and John Arthur, remainder of estate save wife's thirds.
To son Owen, 1 shilling.
To daughter Esther Cooper, ditto.
To daughter Mary Spear, ditto.
To son William ditto.
