Nominated as an Ensign of Kent County Militia by Colonel Henry Coursey.(An ensign would be equivalent to a modern 2nd lieutenant.) Coursey mentions that Josias Lanham "is my Majors Sonn in Law" [NOTE: His major would have been Major James Ringgold.]

Josias Lanham states his age as about 35 years.
Other persons deposed mention that Josias Lanham was the son-in-law of Major James Ringold and may have been functioning as a constable at the time he and Major Ringold entered the dwelling of the widow Tovey on the day of her husband's death and examined the contents of several chests. At issue was if this was done with her permission and just what Major Ringold was looking for.
