"Samuel Cotton (1759-1836) enlisted, 1776, as a private in Capt. Joseph Churchill's company, Col. Comfort Sage's regiment, which was stationed at Governor's Island. He served on the armed frigate "Hancock," which blew up the "Levant." He was born in Middletwon, Conn.; died in Newfield, NY

Samuel Cotton (wife Sarah Banks) applied for a pension. In his letter he states " he is a native of Middletown in the state of Connecticut, that he was recently a resident in the county of Tompkins, in the state of New York, and that he now resides with his son Shubael B. Cotton, in the city of New York. That in the year 1776, in the month of April, in the aforesaid town of Middletown, he enlisted in the continental army, in the regiment of Colonel Sage and the company of Capt. Joseph Churchill....." He is now in his seventy first year. It is notarized 18 May 1830. He never received approval for a pension because his record of service could never be verified.
