Captain Increase Holly

(Abt 1646 - 20 May 1732)

Increase HOLLY was an Ensign in the Stamford Trained Band in Oct 1699 and later promoted to Lieutenant in May 1707. Later still, he was promoted to Captain.

The highly structured Connecticut Colonial militia system was not officially organized until 1739, however, from the earliest days of the young colony, there was a militia set up to protect the inhabitants.

A common misconception of the Connecticut militias is that of a small company of men from a particular town or village who would occasionally muster on the local common or green and practice the militia drill of the day. This is only partially correct. These town militias (sometimes referred to as Trained Bands) belonged to a numbered Militia Regiment. Not only would the Town Militia Companies train among themselves--under company officers (Captain, Lieutenant, Ensign, Sergeant and Corporal)--they would also train with their numbered regiments who were commanded by Field Grade Officers (Colonel, Lt. Colonel and Major). During the Revolutionary War, these Militia Regiments were combined with others to form Militia Brigades which came under the command of a Brigadier General.
