Obituary
CHARLES J. SAVITZCharles J. He was seventy-one years of age.
Surviving him is his wife, Rebecca (nee Osmun) and the following children: George and Lee and Mrs. William Helfrich and Mrs. Mame Sell, all of this city. Two brothers, Henry, of Washington, D.C., and Tilghman, of Jersey, also survive.
He was born and raised in this city and as a youth learned the trade of an axle maker. At nineteen years of age on August 20, 1861, he enlisted as a private in Co. B, 47th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, under Capt. Emmanuel P. Rhoads and was honorably discharged, October 9, 1863. The following day he re-enlisted with the Veteran Volunteers at Key West, under Col. T. H. Good and served until September 6, 1865. Upon returning to this city after the war, he took up his residence in the First Ward, where he became one of the best known and most popular residents. He took an active interest in politics and as a good Democrat, he was one of the founders of the party in that section of the city. For three terms of two years each he was a member of the local police force, serving first under the late Dr. A. J. Martin, from 1880 to 1884.
