Notes
Birth
According to the Lompoc Valley Historical Society, Henry William DOERGES died on 11 July 1937 at the age of 94 years, 11 months and 1 day. That would change his birthdate to 8 Aug 1842.The June 1900 census of Los Angeles Township, Los Angeles, CA states that Henry DOERGES was born in Missouri, and not in Germany as told by relatives.
The 1920 California Census, lists Henry DOERGES as being born in Hanover, Germany, as were both of his parents. It also lists his age as 71 years, and that he is a retired farmer. Henry and Ellen Nora were listed as living in Santa Rita Precinct, Santa Barbara, CA.
Immigration
In the Passenger & Immigration Lists Index, Vol. A-G on page 481 there is a listing for a DOERGE, Henry, no age given, who arrived in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA in 1864. The full information can be found in sourcebook 9293: US Works Projects Administration Index to Records of Alien's Declarations of Intention to Immigrate, Vol 3: Letter D, pp 1-248. Henry DOERGE's listing can be found on page 117 of this sourcebook. This may or may not be my ancestor.
Military
Henry William DOERGES enlisted in Co. H, 14th Reg't, Illinois Infantry when he was seventeen years of age. His father, William DOERGES, signed the consent form to allow him to join the same regiment as his older brother, William. When mustered in at Camp Butter, Illinois on 9 Mar 1865, he was listed as being born in Germany, age 18, his occupation listed as farmer. He is described as being 5 feet 4 3/4 inches tall, fair complected, with hazel eyes and auburn hair.
It is recorded on his July muster roll that he "deserted July 26, 1865, Kansas, enroute for Fort Kearney, Nebaska." It seems that he and his older brother, William, left together.
According to the U.S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, Henry was "mustered out on 26 Jul 1865." The original source was the Illinois Roster of Officers and Enlisted Men.

Listed along with Henry William and Ellen DOERGES are Gin CHOW, his wife Carrie and their two children. Gin Chow was born in China in 1857 and came to San Francisco when he was 16 years old. By 1890, he had moved south and become known in the Santa Barbara area for his fruit and vegetables. He grew them on a small farm (probably connected to the Doerges farm) in the Lompoc Valley. (See article by Cecilia Rasmussen in the Los Angeles Times, 26 June 2005, titled Farmer Grew Claim to Fame as 'Weather Prophet'.) Gin Chow died in June 1933 when he was struck by a farmer's truck as he walked along State Street in Santa Barbara. He was 76 years old.Endnotes
