According to the letter written by Elmer Jacob Weis Junior, after he graduated from High School un June 1943, and turned 18 in October, he registered for the draft. He was inducted into the army on Jan 1944 at Jefferson Baracks in St. Louis, MO. He volunteered for the Army Air Corp and became a tail gunner on a B-24 Bomber. With all of the subsequent training and two ports of embarkation, the war ended before he could see any action. He counted himself "very lucky."
