| Death | 30 Jul 1867 | Murdered while returning to Texas by wagon and team from Missouri where he had gone to collect his wife's inheritance of household items like a feather bed from her mother. After a day's travel, he was waylaid by outlaws, thinking he carried money. They tied him to a tree, tortured and beheaded him, sunk his head and his body with rocks in a creek. Next morning, men from the church were seining for fish when they caught his head in their net. Word was sent to his widow in Texas by letter from the sheriff in Baxter Springs. - Baxter Springs, Cherokee, Kansas | | | |
