Death
NORFOLK - Helen Lang Huffington Simmons of Boca Raton, Fla., and Norfolk, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Sept. 12, 2009. She was 101. She was predeceased by her husbands, B. Walter Huffington and Maclin Simmons; a sister, Mary C. Lang; a brother, John Y. Lang; her parents, Rebecca and Joseph Lang; and cousins, Mary McCaa Deal and Nellie McCaa Cole. Born in Birmingham, Ala., on Jan. 20, 1908, Helen was the granddaughter of Mollie Campbell Lang of Apple Grove, Va., and Adjutant General of the state of Florida, David Lang of Tallahassee, Fla. Helen attended Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach and was a member of the Great Bridge chapter of the DAR and the Archeological Society of Virginia. Helen is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth H. Furr; granddaughters, Anne Furr Huffman and husband Stephen of Norfolk and Beth Furr Johnson and husband Jeffrey; great -grandchildren, Kimberly E. Johnson, Matthew W. Johnson and Thomas W. Johnson of Boca Raton, Fla.; and a niece, Mildred W. Curling of Suffolk. The Rev. Harry W. Crandall will conduct a graveside service Saturday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. at Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth. A celebration of Helen's inspirational life will follow in the Yacht Room at the Pier Condominium, Norfolk.The Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, Virginia, September 17, 2009
