Birth

Calendars were reformed and changed in 1752. Because of that, John MARSH celebrated his birthday on 11 June.

Hobbies

John was a gifted amateur musician, composer, fiddle player, organist and writer on musical topics. His output of orchestral music was by far the most prolific of anyone in England in his time and he was the only English composer of the latter half of the 18th. century to write symphonies.

Interests

He was the author of a textbook on astronomy and during the invasion scare of 1803 he studied military tactics and achieved promotion to the rank of Captain with a company of volunteers.
Towards the end of his life he took an interest in a movement established to convert the Jews to Anglican Christianity and in 1822 joined with several others to form a local auxiliary society of the same association.

Residence

The will of his father, Henry MARSH, as "of Greenwich Hospital" dated IIth May and proved 25th June 1772 left all to his wife Susan and recites that his eldest son John MARSH is in expectancy of the Kentish estate on the death of "John WINCHESTER, of Nethersole, co. Kent, Esq." That son John MARSH, succeeded to these estates within ten years of his father's death, as in 1782 he sold the estate of Nethersole which had been in the family for six generations. John MARSH died in 1828.
