The Royal Navy had at least 6 ships that went by the name of Actaeon, (see Wikipedia) The first two ended service in 1766, and in 1776 (at Charleston Harbour). The next was a 44-gun frigate launched in 1778 and would have been the only one that John could have been a purser on at the time of his marriage where it is mentioned that he was a purser on HMS Actaeon.(Some of the records searched imply that he was serving on the HMS Actaeon that was scuttled at Charleston Harbour in South Carolina in the great British defeat against American forces in 1776).
