Individual Details
Robert (3) BARTLEY
(22 Oct 1826 - 4 Sep 1913)
Mr Robert BARTLEY, an old colonist, was born in 1826 in Jersey, in the
Channel Islands, where both he and his brother, Mr Edward BARTLEY,
were brought up in the building trade. After spending several years as
clerk of works at the Victoria College and other buildings, he came
out to New Zealand in 1854 aboard the ship "Joseph Fletcher".
He started his business in Auckland and found plenty of work to keep
him fully employed. For a number of years he held prominent place
amongst the contractors of Auckland, and many a solidly built erection
stands as a testimonial to the manner in which he did his duty.
In public affairs he has taken a keen and intelligent interest, and
has always been willing to help forward any deserving cause brought
under his notice.
Mr BARTLEY was married in Jersey, before coming to the Colony, to a
daughter of Mr KERBY, of that place, and has four sons and four
daughters. One of the sons (Clem) is manager of the Newton branch of
the Auckland Savings Bank, and another holds a responsible position in
the South Island. Mr & Mrs BARTLEY are now living in quiet retirement
at the North Shore, in a pleasant house overlooking the harbour.
Note 2
A recollection of a Ewan Allison (printed in the North Shore Times on
24 January 1962) records that Robert BARTLEY lived in Devonport, and
also had a house in Hurstmere Road, Takapuna, opposite O'Neills
Avenue. It was rumoured that in the old days, it was he who put the
weed in the Lake (Pupuke)!!
