Birth
In the Parish of Newark.Military
Enlisted 22 May 1845 (aged 14 Years 10 months) and served in the 37thRegiment of Foot, firstly as an under-age member. Served 10 years 9
months in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), and 6 years 6 months in India. Total
service was 24 years 210 days. Regimental No.2265.

WO 97/1507, Discharge No.7098In this paper he stated that he intended to reside in Nottingham and
he was found there on the 1881 Census with his wife.
James COLE(MOSS) Junior, also served in the 37th Regiment of Foot,
attaining the rank of sergeant. He visited his family in New Zealand
cira 1872 until 1874. It must be stressed HE WAS NOT A FENCIBLE which
must be remembered as he bore the same name and was in the same
regiment as his father who was the Fencible. He returned to England in
July 1874 and is thought to have married after that time. He joined
the 37th Regiment 22nd May 1845 at the age of 14 years 8 months at
Gosport, Hampshire, and eventually became a sergeant, regimental
number 2265. He was retired to a Chelsea Hospital Pension after
serving 21 years 210 days of full age service and 3 years under age
with the 37th. His service included 10 years nine months in Ceylon and
6 1/2 years in India. His discharge papers state that he was of very
good character and conduct with four good conduct badges. Had he not
been promoted, the papers say he would have been in possession od four
good conduct badges, the Indian Mutiny medal, a Silver medal and 5
pounds graturity for long service and good conduct. The discharge
papers dated 19th October 1869 at Pembroke Barracks gives his
description as being 5' 7", dark brown hair, grey eyes, fair
complexion, labourer, with no scars on his body. His pension was paid
out at Auckland from 20th February until the final payment made there
2nd July 1874. From this we get a picture of him being in New Zealand
for several years before returning to the country of his birth.
