Immigration

"Bussorah Merchant" arrived in Sydney 3 September 1839. It had sailed around the Cape of Good Hope. with 236 immigrants on board.Joseph Clark, aged 49 years or maybe more, a cloth manufacturer and Quaker was brought out by the Government (his parents were Daniel a labourer and his wife Sarah) along with his wife Mary aged 49 years, native of Horsly Gloucestershire. Her parents were William Weer, millman of the same place and his wife Anna Cleft. Their nine children also emigrated Lucy 29, needlewoman, Sarah 27 house servant, James 22 gardener, Dniel 21 labourer, Ruth 19 needlewoman, Maryann 17 house servant, Joseph 16 labourer, Samual 14 labourer, Maria 12 house servant.

Death

Mary Cavigan says: Josep Clark, father of Sarah Jane Clarke died in Sydney, his occupation Sexton. Aged 62 years, only 7 years after arriving in Australia. He may have altered his age downwards in order to get on the ship to Australia, as there is a discrepancy in his age. His will probate was granted on 3 February 1848 to his son Samual Clarke (age 21). Stated goods under 10 pounds. His will Last Will and Testament of me Joseph Clarke of the city of Sydney in the Colony of New South Wales, labourer. I devise that a parcel of land containing admeasurements ten acres situate at Kissing Point in the Parish of Hunters Hill in the Colony aforesaid, with the appurtenaces unto my sons, Daniel Clark (age28) and Joseph Clark (age 23). To hold the same unto Daniel Clarke (age 28) and Joseph Clarke (age 23) their heirs and asisgns as Tenants in Common and not as Joint Tenants. I devise all that parcel of land situate at Mount Lachlan in the Parish of Alexandria in the said Colony unto my son Samuel Clarke (age 21) his heirs and assigns forever.and to all that Dwelling House erected by me in the Sydney Burial ground and other my personal Estate and Effects I give and bequeath the same unto my sons ,Daniel Clark (age 28), Joseph Clarke (age 23) and Samuel Clarke (age21) and to my daughter ruth Clarke ( age 26) to be equally divided amongst them share and share like. I appoint my said son, Samuel Clarke (age 21) my executor of this my Will and hereby revokeing all othe Wills by me and at any time heretofore made Signed 29 Decembr 1945. It appears that lack of mention of his wife, Mary is that she died prior to his death. It would also appear that the other daughters, Lucy (age 36), Maryann (age 24) and Maria (age 19) had either married or died prior to their fathers death.
