Alison Harmer says: He served in the 8th Field Ambulance in WWI.Formed in Egypt in January 1916 as part of the 5th Division, the 8th Field Ambulance was a crucial Australian Imperial Force (AIF) medical unit on the Western Front. It provided second-line evacuation, moving wounded from Regimental Aid Posts to Casualty Clearing Stations. The unit suffered heavy casualties during its baptism of fire at the Battle of Fromelles in July 1916.
