A History of the George MILES Family - Page 22 of a book (Title unknown)

George Miles was born at Englishcoomb, Somerset, on the 29th April 1941. and migrated to Australia with his parents on the "Marshall Bennett" in 1854. He was apprenticed to a Mr Hartley of Hamstead Moolap for a wage of 20 shillings and sixpence a year. It is uncertain how long he remained in this position. Later he traveled to Kingston, near Creswick with his parents and married Jane Benbow Matthews at Dean, near Ballarat on April 29th. 1868, the Rev. Burns, a Methodist minister performing the ceremony. It would seem that he worked as a farm laborer until hard times forced him to go to Melbourne, where he worked for Henry Berry a merchant, and others and was later employed by the Kew Council. Retiring at age of 70 years, he bought a 2 acre property alongside his son George's home in Bairnsdale and there lived happily, spending most of his time in his big garden, until his death at 83 years of age on October 3, 1924. His widow returned to Melbourne, to live with her daughter, Annie, in Hawthorn, until her death in 1937 at the age of 94 years. George and Jane were very keen Methodists and worked diligently for their church wherever they happen to be living. While living in Highbury Grove, Kew, George was caretaker of the church property and lead in the music and singing of the church services. Both George and Jane also taught in the Sunday school. Jane was pleased to trace her ancestry back to the family of Admiral John Benbow; she was also second cousin to Sir William Angliss. They had family of five sons and three daughters.
