MR ROBERT McCULLOCH, builder, died at "Kepdarroch," Kambrook Road, Caulfield on Saturday aged 62 years. He was a native of Carisbrook, and served for eight years as a councillor of Tullarook Shire, of which he was a past president. He came to Melbourne about 20 years ago, and was a councillor of Caulfield City from 1925 to 1931, and Mayor in 1929-30. He was a former president of the Caulfield Scottish Society, and was president of the boy scout movement in the district at the time of his death. He has left a widow and family of three sons. The burial took place in the Brighton Cemetery this afternoon.
Anthea has the following memories of being told about Robert and visitors who came to “Kepdarroch”:
“Mum used to talk about John Thomas Packer and Robert Menzies visiting grandpa with other "distinguished" guests in the front room smoking cigars. Grandma, my mother and the other ladies were presented with wine, delicious delicacies to nibble and pastel coloured cigarettes in another room.
My great-grandfather's name is inscribed on the foundation stone at the Caulfield Town Hall. We have a photograph of grandpa in his mayoral robes and Grandma (Matilda, known affectionately as Tilly) in her gown presenting the debutantes. My mother Athalie was one of those presented.”
Robert served one term as Mayor of Caufield (Vic) in 1929. There is a photo of him in the foyer on the now Glen Eira council offices (cr. Hawthorn and Glen Eira Roads.)
