Individual Details

Prestwood BENBOWE

(1644 - 14 Jun 1705)

Came from outside Herefordshire, suspect from Shropshire, a county to the north. (was where Sir Admiral John Benbow was born in 1653). No proof of a relationship can be found at present. Was maybe known as Presstwood as well. Buried at Thornbury as Prestwood Benbo. Parents possibly John and Margaret Benbow living at Stoke Bliss the parish adjoining Thornbury. Interestingly, Sir Admiral had an uncle John Benbo who was a Captain in the Roundhead Army during the Civil War who went over to the Kings side and fought in the Royal Army at the Battle of Worchester (13/9/1651). After the defeat, he fled to Shrewsbury where he was captured and executed as a traitor. He is buried in Old St Chads churchyard in Shrewsbury. Maybe a connection with one of these John's?? William R Benbow had 1644 as birth date. I am unable to find a source document.
