Individual Details
William ROADKNIGHT
(9 May 1792 - 25 Nov 1862)
Arrived in Hobart, Tasmania aboard the Skelton in 1820.
William and Thomas left Launceston as passengers on the "Vansittart" on 27 Apr 1836 bound for Port Phillip (Ref: POL458/1/2 p28).
William left Launceston as a passenger on the "Scout" on 16 Sep 1842 bound for Port Phillip (Ref: POL459/1/2 p23).
The region (Anglesea) was settled in the 1830s by squatters attracted to the freshwater creek and the grazing land which lay behind the sand dunes. Most notable was the arrival of William Roadknight (the local point is named after him) who brought sheep across from Tasmania in 1836 and settled near Ceres Bridge, west of Geelong. William and his son Thomas pioneered a track to the Cape Otway lighthouse in 1846.
By 1840 the enterprising Henty brothers had established a major whaling station at Portland and over the next seven years they had a small whaling station at Point Bunbury which is where the Apollo Bay golf course now stands. Around this time William Roadknight took up land in the district. By 1851 Roadknight had cut a road from his property to the coast near Cape Otway.
1846 Point Roadknight named after William Roadknight.
Death certificate says he spent 18 years in Tasmania and 24 years in Victoria, which would mean he moved to Victoria in 1838.
FarmlandForest&Surf says: William Roadknight, an early settler who had also spent some time in Tasmania, and arrived in Geelong in 1835, took up the Yan Yan Gurt Station, south of Winchelsea, in 1838. He transferred it in 1842 to his son-in-law, Thomas Vicary, a member of the New South Wales and Queensland squatting families. Earlier, in 1840, Roadknight leased the River Station, also south of Winchelsea, transferring it in 1851 to his son, Thomas.
