A settlement and former extensive sheep farm in Sutherland, Ribigill lies 2 miles (3 km) south southwest of Tongue in N Highland. The land is now part of Ben Loyal Estate but once supported 3000 sheep and a community of up to sixty people, on a farm rented from Duke of Sutherland.
The land had once been the property of Lord Reay, who began clearing people to make way for sheep around 1800, a process continued when the land was sold to the Countess of Sutherland in 1829. The BBC television programme Who Do You Think You Are? explained that between 1839 and the 1933, the farm was worked by the ancestors of actor and comedian David Mitchell and extended to 11,685 ha (28,875 acres). The sheep were driven to market at Falkirk and this represented one of the most lucrative farms in Sutherland. The Duke sold this part of his land in 1919 and the area became the Ben Loyal sporting estate.
Death

JOHN WAUGH.
The death is announced of Mr John
Waugh, of Clare Station, which took
place at his residence, Killara, Sydney,
on 29th ult., at the age of 86 years. The
late Mr Waugh was born in Scotland,
and came to Victoria as a young lad, and
was some time in the neighborhood of
Ballarat during the digging days, He
afterwards came over to New South
Wales, where his expert knowledge of
sheep brought him into close association
with graziers on the Murrumbidgee
River above Hay. In May, 1881, in
conjunction with Messrs Stanbridge and
Meares, he purchased and took delivery
of Clare Station from the Hon. William
Campbell, who had, in 1869, bought the
property from the bank as mortgagees
of the iate Hugh Glass, with 120,000
sheep. Mr Waugh improved the pro
perty considerably, and had the wool
shed removed and extended to hold 63
shearrs, and otherwise facilitated the
working of the station by improved
drafting yards and other conveniences.
In 1882, 200,000 sheep were shorn on
Clare Station, but the 1884 Crown
Lands Act, with the sub division of
holdings, reduced the area held by the
station considerably. Later on Mr
Waugh purchased Gogeldrie and Yar
rangnbilly Stations ; and for the past
ten or twelve years he has re
sided near Sydney. In some of
his earlier pastoral investments he was
associated with Messrs Joseph and
William McGaw, and also his brother,
William Waugh, now deceased. The
late Mr Waugh was a thorough judge of
merino sheep and wool, and had a very
wide experience of the pastoral industry
in Riverina. He was well known to the
older generation of pastoralists, the ma
jority of whom have now gone west.
He leaves three sons, Mr W. A. Waugh,
now managing Clare Station, and John
and Allan, all of whom are interested in
station proporties ; also one daughter,
Mrs W. F. Parkinson, of Christchurch,
New Zealand.
