Individual Details

Neil Duncan WHYTE Snr

(1828 - 1 Oct 1908)

Neil Duncan Whyte was born in 1828 in Kilmun, Argyll, Scotland, and baptized on 3 February 1828 in the parish of Dunoon and Kilmun, Argyll. He was the son of Duncan Whyte and Mary Ferguson, growing up in a region known for its rugged landscapes and deep ties to Gaelic culture. As a young man in mid-19th century Scotland—a time marked by rural hardship and population shifts—Neil took a bold step toward a new life by emigrating to the Australian colonies.
Before leaving Scotland, Neil married Margaret Cargill Flett on 29 September 1854 in Inverkip, Renfrewshire. The couple then journeyed to Victoria, Australia aboard the ship Clydeside, departing from Gourock in 1855. Though his adult life and legacy were cemented in Australia, Neil’s origins in Argyll, and his marriage in Inverkip, connected him to two rich Scottish communities during a time of great social and economic change.
